Odesk Jobs: What Employers look For

By +Chris Benedict Valencia

If you were wondering: “where could I find a job online?” odesk is a great place to find a freelance job.

Do you want to get a job at odesk but you can’t seem to beat more experienced contractors?

Some people give up a few weeks after they signed up in odesk and don’t get a job. If you are a beginner at odes, you must understand that there is close to a million other contractors in looking for a job. You need to beat other people who are looking for the same jobs as you do. How do you do this?

The answer is by putting yourself in the place of an employer and deciding for yourself who would you hire given the few information provided to you. Here are some of the information that an employer gets to see and how you could make these information work for your advantage.

The face! Show the face!

Your face. Not a smiley or a picture of your cat. Employers prefer contractors who have the confidence to show their face. You can’t just place and self photo either. If you’re thinking that the photo from last night’s party might look cool, think again. You must put photos that look professional and should be clear. Use a photo that you would use if you are applying to a real world job.

Don’t be lazy! Finish your profile
I have hired a couple of contractors from odesk in the past and I know some people think they can get away with an incomplete profile. Use your complete name because that makes you more trustworthy. Also avoid using titles that’s not related to your work. The title is can be used for more attention grabbing and essential statements like: experienced writer, SEO specialist or Programming Master.

Make a professional looking description on the overview by being concise and straight to the point. Think of the message that you want to tell your prospective employer and put that in your profile overview. If you have problems with your grammar, have someone else check your description before you put it in.

Make your pay requirement competitive

You must be competitive with your pay rate too. If you are planning to be a serious contractor in odesk, you must use the hourly rate because there are a lot of problems in the fixed payments where employers don’t pay contractors. Hourly rate jobs may be more difficult because you are required to work under supervision of a webcam but after a few couple of hours working, you’ll think it’s not even there.
Related experience

The experience you put in your resume should include all the skills you have that will get the job done. Links to certificates will give you an advantage if you have some. You should include all experiences including the ones you did outside odesk and the ones that are not online. Links for reference should be included.

Take the tests

There are all sorts of tests for contractors in odesk. You should take these tests and do well with them because your competitions try to ace them too. An employer choosing between contractors with the same experience and credentials have little other basis than the tests results provided by odesk. Some of the tests may seem ridiculous to you but not the employers who will pay you.

Awsome-ize your portfolio

Your portfolio includes all projects that you have accomplished. You can post past projects through screenshots and links to your projects that can be seen online. You should add a detailed description about your role in the completion of the project.
If you have a blog or if you worked to help out on another person’s blog you can add it there. If you don’t have anything to put in your portfolio, you need to make a blog or do some low paying projects in odesk first.
